Lewis C. Maples – Obituary

Funeral service for Lewis C. Maples, age 82, of Hartselle will be Monday, September 23, 2013 at 2:00pm at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Bass, Rev. Brian Bridges and Rev. Harold Maples officiating with burial in Shoal Creek Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the Church one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be from 5:00pm until 9:00pm Sunday evening at Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Maples died on Friday, September 20, 2013 at his home. He was born January 26, 1931 in Etowah County to Buford Carrell Maples and Clara Lee Spears Maples. At the age of six, Lewis obtained a social security card and worked at a local grocery store in Decatur, delivering groceries in a little red wagon. At the age of, he started working for Charley Charles in east Decatur, again delivering groceries on his bike and working in the store. At approximately age 15, Lewis began working at Stone Lumber Company after school. After graduating from Riverside High School in 1949, he continued working at Stone Lumber full-time in the paint and interior design department. Mr. Maples married Eldora Roberts November 17, 1950 and they were blessed with twin children Harold and Carol Maples. In 1969 Lewis left Stone Lumber Company to manage Glidden Paint Store on Sixth Avenue in Decatur for 20 years. Afterwards, he owned and managed Maples Decorating Center in Hartselle and Floors-R-Us in Decatur. In 2000 he retired from the paint business but continued to sell flooring from his shop at home. In 1964, Lewis, his wife Eldora, and their teenage twins Harold and Carol moved from Decatur to their current home in Priceville. Lewis was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church for approximately 45 years where he also served as a Deacon. Lewis was also the Lifetime President of the Greater Decatur Bowling Association. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Eldora Roberts Maples; a son, Harold Ray Maples (Brenda); a daughter, Carol Maples Hardin; one brother, Billy Don Maples (Mearleen); two sisters, Evelyn Maples Motes (Fred) and Linda Jo Maples Bomar (Cecil); as well as 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Deacons of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews.
