FLORENCE – The City of Florence’s First Black Fireman and Lieutenant Fire Inspector will be signing his first published book, “Let Not Your Heart Be Hardened” in celebration of his birthday. The book signing will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 11: am until 3:30 pm at the WC Handy Home, Museum and Library located at 620 West College Street in Florence.
On September 21, 1981 at 24 years of age, Joe Duster made history by becoming the First Black Fireman in the City of Florence. He would make history again in 1993 by becoming the First Black Lieutenant/Fire Inspector in the City of Florence.
“Let Not Your Heart Be Hardened” co-written by Muya Monique Nkazi, is a story about Duster’s life spanning from a poverty-stricken childhood to painful experiences in becoming the First Black Fire Fighter in Florence, Alabama.
