Leon Trice Hinds, 85 of Huntsville, Alabama passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 15th, peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Trice was born at the Guntersville Hospital, October 30, 1934 to Leon Henry and Flora Ann Hinds of Arab, Alabama. He showed great artistic abilities as a small child growing up in Arab and received private art classes from Alabama artists throughout his public school years. He won awards at both the state and national levels. He loved local history and he and his mother worked on the History of Arab and were charter members of the Arab Historical Society. He did many pen and ink sketches of old Arab. He chose Birmingham Southern College to pursue his art education.
Trice was employed as a Technical Illustrator at the Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal for over 30 years. He was commissioned to paint several local scenes to hang in the newly opened Sparkman Center and received many accolades for both his technical and artistic work.
He loved beautiful things and with his talent, he created them. His favorite style was Impressionism with its beautiful use of colors and subjects. He graciously opened his home for tours for civic organizations and was commissioned to do pen and ink party invitations and posters for non-profits.
He was the first Chairman of the Twickenham Luminaries and Home Tour, past Board Member of the Twickenham Historic Preservation District Association and Historic Huntsville. He was also a past member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
Trice was kind, gentle, and a man of great faith, a Christian man, lifelong member of the Arab United Methodist Church and attendee of the Central Presbyterian Church of Huntsville. He loved his family, friends and his beloved cat, “Lady Bug”.
He is survived by sisters, Gay Hinds Money (Charles) Huntsville; and Ann Hinds Meinert (Dennis) Chattanooga, TN; nieces, Kimberly Rodgers (Chris), Huntsville, Lee Ann Meinert, Chattanooga; nephew, Matthew Hinds Meinert, Birmingham; grandnieces, Anna Wynn Rodgers, Huntsville, AL and Abbie Rodgers, Birmingham; and his many cousins.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Arab City Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Zandora Bone, Huntsville and Gladys Graves, Arab, for their devotion to him during his illness. They also want to thank Brittany Dunham, Hospice Nurse and the Hospice Team of North Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Greater Huntsville Humane Society or the Weeden House Museum.
