Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 24, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Peck Funeral Home. Lefern Criscoe Butts was born March 2, 1935 in Cullman County, Alabama to Robert Criscoe and Nora Bell Spivey Criscoe. Ms. Butts died on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at Huntsville Health and Rehab. She was born March 2, 1935. Her brother Ray and her sister DonAnn Criscoe Clowers, were born almost a decade before and after Lefern.
Lefern was preceded in death by her parents, Brother Ray Criscoe, and Great-Grandchild, Quartney Flanagan. She was a Member of the Church of God.
She married Virgil Butts in 1953 and lived in Denver, Colorado, where her two daughters Kay Butts Casteel and Fay Butts Flanagan were born. They moved to Lakeland, Florida, three years later.
A few years after they started a farm in Danville, Alabama on land gifted to her and her family by her father. In 1969, the family welcomed a surprise baby boy they named Danny. He brought a breath of fresh air to the family and his sisters helped raise him.
Fern and Virgil started raising chickens with ConAgra and worked public jobs until 1977, when they divorced. Lefern started working at Summerford Nursing Home as a CNA where she worked hard to take care of patients and made lifelong friends. In her work life and beyond, she impressed people with her straightforward, unpretentious nature.
She retired after more than 20 years in 2013. She had five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren. She doted on each new generation of children and had a talent for seeking out the best Christmas gifts. Even though she knew how to give, she herself was content with the simple things in life.
On October 1, 2023, she got saved and became an even greater blessing to her family. She became ill in January of this year, and after a long hospital stay, moved into Summerford Nursing Home where she had previously been employed. At this point. she began to realize she was too sick to live alone and was able to accept her change in life with grace. She then moved to Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation, so she could be closer to her family.
While there, she was a good witness, and the workers loved her, and took good care of her until her death last week.
The family would like to thank Amedysis for hospice care and Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation for their kindness and support. The family also appreciates all the visits, calls, and prayers, and especially the miracle God preformed for here in the las years of her life.
