Lawrence “Larry” Meyer died Friday morning September 6th at Floyd E. “Tut” Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL. He was 90 years old. Larry was born to Lawrence D. Meyer Sr. and Yvonne E. Crandall Meyer in Hollywood, CA on July 27, 1934. He spent his young years between California, Tennessee, and Auburn, AL, sparking his lifelong love for Auburn Football. After graduating high school in 1951 from St. Andrews, Sewanee, he joined the U.S. Army. During the Korean Conflict, he served in Army Intelligence stationed in Hawaii.
After the army he worked for Philco as a tech rep. When Ford bought Philco Larry began a 24-year communications career with Ford Aerospace at Houston’s Mission Control Center. He worked to advance the U.S. Space Program on missions from Gemini through the Shuttle program. Programs included Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and Shuttle Columbia, as well as NASA-Saia. While in Texas, he received a degree from San Jacinto College in Pasadena. His work on space programs brought him to Huntsville, AL in 1989.
Larry’s love and devotion to our Lord was nurtured through the Episcopal Church. As a youth he served as an acolyte as well as a sacristan while at St. Andrews. As an adult, he served many roles in the church up to and including diocesan level committees and delegate to diocesan and general conventions. One of his treasured roles was an acolyte master (and teacher) with many of his youngsters now grown adults following in his footsteps.
Since retirement, he has served the Huntsville community through Meals on Wheels, CASA, American Red Cross disaster relief efforts, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, various homeless projects and countless hours serving the Episcopal Church and the communities in which he lived. In his spare time, he took a home repair electronics course and became certified as a home inspector. He loved wood carving, gardening, traveling, and RVing; he loved working with his hands and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren while working alongside them.
He is survived by Barbara, his wife; his children, Lawrence Douglas Meyer Ill (Sharon), Connie Meyer, and Diane Hutson (Danny); five grandchildren, Benjamin Meyer (Whitney), Sarah Walden, Joshua Bowen (Savannah), Noah Kesckes, and Rowan Thames; and eight great-grandchildren.
Larry was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. The memorial service will immediately follow at the church with the Revs. Donavan Cain and Jeannie Randall officiating.
