Lawrence Edward Merritt, age 79, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at his residence in Floyd E. “Tut” Fann VA Nursing home. He was born in Cottonwood, Alabama on August 25, 1933 and was preceded in death by parents Mancel and Ester Merritt. Lawrence is survived by his daughter Laura (Merritt) Hicks, her husband Larry Hicks for which he loved like his on son and four grandchildren Destiny Hicks (age 23), Lucas Hicks (age 14), Devon Hicks (age 14) and Talon Hicks (age 14). Mr. Merritt is a US Army veteran. He served his country in both the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was a caring, dedicated father and granddaddy. He enjoyed living and fishing in Alaska , playing yahtzee , monopoly, rummy, poker and go-fish. He was a man of time and few words. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26th at Spry Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens in Meridianville at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations in memory of Lawrence Merritt be made to Floyd E. “Tut” Fann located at 2701 Meridian Street, Huntsville, AL 35811 or North Alabama Hospice at 3311 Bob Wallace Avenue Suite 101, Huntsville, AL 35805.
