Athens Youth Commissioners go to court

ATHENS-Members of the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commissioner participated in a mock trial today at the Limestone County Courthouse.

They played the roles of a defendant accused of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance, the judge, members of the jury, the prosecutor and even an unruly girlfriend who was in the audience and hollered and called a witness a liar.
The jury determined the defendant was not guilty because the public intoxication arrest that led to the possession charge was made on private property, not public property.
Local attorneys Eddie Alley (who is also Municipal Court Judge) and Michael Sizemore arranged the program and helped educate Youth Commissioners about the legal process, legal careers and the importance of reporting for jury duty.
