Laurence “Larry” Dean Bachman, 83, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away suddenly on February 21, 2025, surrounded by family.
Larry was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Laurence and Evelyn Bachman on December 4th, 1941. Larry was raised on the family farm outside of Wichita in Derby, Kansas, and graduated from Derby High School in 1959. He attended Wichita State University and joined the Air Force ROTC program, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1963. Larry was sworn into the Air Force in 1963 and served his country with honor for 21 years, including a tour in Vietnam, retiring in 1984 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While serving in the Air Force, he earned a master’s degree in meteorology from Wayne State University. After retiring from the Air Force, Larry worked for Boeing until his retirement in 2002.
Larry will be remembered as a devoted husband, brother, father to four sons, grandpa to ten, uncle to eight more, and dog dad to his beloved Rocky. He was an avid golfer, traveler, hunter, animal lover, and sports fan. To know Larry was to love Larry. His memorable laugh filled the room. He never missed an opportunity to share a joke or give a good ribbing. He was a man who stood firm in his principles, exemplifying how hard work and commitment can lead to success in life. Larry enjoyed coaching his children in youth sports and helped start the youth Pop Warner football league in Madison, Alabama in the early 90’s. He will be missed by all who loved him, and he will also be celebrated for the lasting impact he had on each of their lives.
Larry is survived by his wife, Cornelia “Cooky” Bachman, sons Tim (Lesa), Chris (Wendy) and Dave (Kristen) Bachman and Ben Murray (Terri), Nephew, Byron (Nikki) Bachman and grandchildren, Jade, Maia, Alex, Seth, Maggie, Gus, Chase, Parker, Crimsyn and Hadley.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Larry would appreciate donations made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
