She was born on December 22, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to the late Reuben Knight Lothrop and Alice Mae Thomas Lothrop. Laura’s final days were spent surrounded by the love of her family at the South Hampton Nursing Home in Owens Cross Roads.

Laura’s life was one marked by devotion to her family, her students, and her faith. She was the beloved matriarch of a family that includes her children, Carole Riser (Michael) Smith, James Douglas (Debra) Riser, and Garnett Elizabeth (Michael) Duenow. Her love and lessons live on through her grandchildren, Michele (Brad) Black, Cindy (Matt) Lott, Ben (Abby) Riser, Brian (Laura) Smith, Stephanie (Justin) Clark, and Becca Riser, as well as her great-grandchildren, Adam Black, Anna Black, James Riser, and Peyton Lott. Laura’s professional life was dedicated to nurturing young minds. As a teacher and later as the director of a daycare, she touched countless lives with her patience, wisdom, and unwavering support. She believed in the power of education and the importance of early childhood development, dedicating herself to guiding the next generation with a gentle hand and a kind heart.

Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom to her church community. Laura was an active member of her church, where she served with joy and dedication. She taught children in Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a vibrant part of the adult Sunday School Class. Her involvement with Missions and the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) was a testament to her desire to spread love and kindness. In March of 1981, Laura embarked on an overseas mission trip to teach Vacation Bible School, further illustrating her commitment to faith and service.

Laura’s interests showcased her love for both learning and adventure. An avid reader, she found solace and excitement within the pages of countless books. Her passion for teaching was paralleled only by her love for spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially during family camping trips.
