Laura Anne Adams Rushing of Florence passed away peacefully on February 17, 2019 at her son’s home in Huntsville.
Born on March 8, 1936 in Iuka, Mississippi, she was the third of six children. She was raised on the family farm, life and memories she always held dear to her heart. She graduated from Iuka High School where she was Most Valuable Basketball Player and was awarded a handcrafted cedar chest. Anne married former husband Kermit Lee Rushing, Jr, predeceased. They had two sons and lived a few years in Florence before moving to Amory, Mississippi. While raising her sons she completed her teaching degree at MSCW, Mississippi College for Women, and her master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. She taught at West Amory Elementary School until she retired from the public school system and returned to Florence.
She was a member of Woodmont Baptist Church. She volunteered weekly at the Help Center Florence, Alabama. As an accomplished quilter and member of the Needle Chasers Quilt Guild of Iuka, her quilts won awards and were sold in Florence. Her work in her own garden inspired her to earn the distinction of Master Gardener. While she loved her activities, her proudest accolades were her sons and grandchildren.
Anne is preceded in death by her loving parents, William Paul and Esther Welch Adams and her brother, William Paul Adams, Jr. and sister and brother-in-law, Maye Adams Smith (Bart). She is survived by siblings, Thomas Lee Adams (Joanne), Carole Adams Dixon (Vance), John David Adams (Janey); two children, Dr. David Lee Rushing of Huntsville, Kermit Lee Rushing, III (Georgiana) of Edmond, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Ann Quay Rushing, William David Rushing, Lee Russell Rushing, Samuel Lee Rushing, Madeline Jewel Rushing, Robert Harrison Rushing.
A visitation is being held at Woodmont Baptist Church in Florence for Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. A memorial service is following at noon. A 2 p.m. graveside service is planned at Mount Gilead Cemetery, Iuka with a reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at The Help Center Florence Alabama and Safeplace, Inc.
