Late Night Officer-Involved Shooting Has Two Colbert County Deputies On Administrative Leave

LEIGHTON-Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine says two officers have been placed on administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting that took place after midnight.

Authorities in Colbert County said a man was airlifted to the hospital after a multi-state police chase after he refused to  stop at a police roadblock in Tishomingo County, Mississippi.

John William Griffin, 53,  the driver of an older model pickup truck who authorities say fired shots at law enforcement during the chase along U.S. Highway 72 during the chase.   When the driver was pinned in athe cul-de-sac on Daryl Lane in Leighton,the driver of the pickup began firing at officers again according to reports from Colbert County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Balentine says the man was in the cul-de-sac he exited the car and was standing behind the driver’s side door when he pointed a shotgun at the officers who returned fire at that time.

The man was injured and airlifted to Huntsville Hospital. His condition is not known at this time.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will investigate the shooting as is standard  procedure in all officer-involved shootings.
