KILLEN-The annual Killen Founder’s Day celebration will take place Friday, August 2nd and
Saturday, August 3rd . Make plans to come out and enjoy these action packed two days.
The theme for this year’s Founder’s Day is celebrating our community relationships and
partnerships, “Stronger Together.” The Grand Marshall for the parade will be Johnny
McGee. He will lead our parade on Friday night, August 2 nd starting at 6:00 p.m. The
parade will run along J.C. Mauldin Highway from Brooks Elementary to Foodland
Marketplace.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Killen Park. There will be 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd
place trophies given for the best parade entries. Friday night entertainment will start
soon after with a Founder’s Day favorite, “Déjà vu.”
Saturday will be full of activities starting with the Killen Founder’s Day 5k run starting at
7:30 a.m. and a 1-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. both will begin at Killen First Baptist Church
and continue through downtown Killen. There will also be a car show sponsored by the
Killen Masonic Lodge 788, which will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Killen Park, in the upper
parking lot by the tennis courts. They will be selling breakfast items.
Other fun activities include singles and doubles horseshoe tournaments on Saturday
and a car bash sponsored by Center Star Fire Department on both Friday and Saturday.
Killen Fire Department will have a dunking booth on Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m.
Some of their participants are Brooks Lionette’s, Brooks Football Team, and Fire
Department staff. There will also be a petting zoo starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
There will be wonderful food with the returning favorite, chocolate dipped frozen
cheesecake. There will also be some new vendors, “The Wright Wiener,” “JJ’s West
Coast Tacos,” and “Get Coned.” Also, we will have great Arts & Crafts vendors, with
everything from clothing to Tupperware. We will have inflatables again this year, staffed
by the Brooks High School Band members and parents. Armbands are for a single day
$6 and for both days $10. We will have water slides this year for toddlers and
elementary aged children. The Friends of the Killen Public Library will be holding a book
fair at their pavilion in the park. They will also have a coloring contest for elementary
aged children (Pre-K – 3 rd grade and 4 th grade – 6 th grade). Last, they will be raffling off
two Family Fun Baskets valued at over $800 each. Tickets are $1 for 1 and $5 for 7 and
can be purchased at their pavilion. The drawing will be at the end of the day on
Saturday (you do not have to be present to win).
The musical entertainment on Saturday will begin at 2:00 p.m. and last until 9:30 p.m.
The acts this year will include “Makin’ Tracks,” “Avery Guinn and Haley Crowell,” “Brash Betty,” and “Bluewater.” The entertainment will conclude with a performance by local favorite, and son of the great Percy Sledge, “Howell Sledge and the Revue.” You do not want to miss this great entertainment.
The night will end with a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. provided by TNT Fireworks.
