THE SHOALS-The Alabama Chapter of the Natchez Trace Parkway Association (NTPA) will be meeting 10 AM at Muscle Shoals City Hall on Saturday, June 6. This is the June quarterly NTPA meeting and the public and all members are urged to hear a preview of the events in the next week. Chairman Annie Perry will give a preview of the next weekend which includes many free educational events throughout the Shoals area. This is the time to buy tickets ($40 each) to the Bicentennial Victory Ball held on Saturday June 13th at Locust Hill in Tuscumbia. Tickets are also sold at Colbert Tourism, Florence Tourism and Cold Water Books.
The program today consists of three War of 1812 speakers.
Lanny Perry, a long-time resident of the area will speak on family ancestors. The Winstons settled in the Tuscumbia and Sheffield area circa 1818-1819. Lanny is the Chairman of the Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation and retired from the U. S. Air Force. He holds a MS degree from Chapman College of Orange, CA.
Robert Perry is a Chickasaw Elder and author, who has moved to Tuscumbia, the former homelands of his tribe. He will exhibit arrows handed down through his family said to have been taken to the War of 1812.
The last speaker will give his demonstration outdoors. Keith Willingham graduated from Colbert Heights High School and has been a Civil War re-enactor since 1985. Keith is responsible for setting up the Encampment at the Sheffield Standpipe and coordinating soldiers, civilians and 1812 crafts people in period dress. Keith will demonstrate his black-powder musket that was used during the War of 1812.
