Kay Hughes Leake passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, at Huntsville Hospital, after a long, hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. Kay was 68 years old.
Kay resided in Lacey’s Spring, Alabama and was preceded in death by her husband, Donnell J. Leake and her father, John R. Hughes. She is survived by her mother, Mary Nell Cooper Hughes Elmore of Huntsville; brother, Col John Hughes (Judy) of Montgomery; sister, Cynthia Hughes Harper (Jeff) of Fishers, Indiana; stepdaughters, Shirley Kennedy (William), Jeanette Vaden (Tommy), and Jessier Pearl (Ricardo) Matta; one nephew and four nieces; and many loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kay grew up on Sand Mountain until her family moved to Scottsboro in 1968. She graduated from Scottsboro High School in 1975 and attended Northeast State Junior College. She graduated from Florence State University in 1980 with a degree in Home Economics.
Kay and Don made their home in Lacey’s Spring. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their motorhome and cruising the Tennessee River on their boat. Kay enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her nieces.
A memorial will be held later in the spring in Scottsboro.
