Carolyn Kay Drake Kay Drake passed away peacefully at Riverside Senior Living in the early morning hours of December 23, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. A longtime resident of Decatur, Alabama, Kay was born in Sedalia, Missouri. Kay moved to Brimingham, Alabama during her high school years. After graduating from Woodlawn High School, Kay joined the Bell Telephone Company where she worked for over forty years.

Kay is survived by two children, Lee Drake (Diane), Kim Schuster (Mitch), as well as four grandchildren, Matthew Drake (Taryn), Jonathan Schuster (Emily), Michael Schuster and Julie Schuster (Robert Margolis). Kay is also survived by five great grandchildren, Hayden Drake, Grayson Drake, Ellis Schuster, Ziggy Margolis, and Rae Schuster.

Kay was preceded in death by Melvin Drake, her loving husband of sixty-three years, an infant son, her parents, Florence Rodgers and Rea Heynen, her sister, Evelyn Griffin, and two brothers, Pat Rodgers (Brenda) and Harry Rodgers (Patricia).

Kay was devoted to her community. She was a longtime member of Westmeade Baptist Church, Decatur, Alabama, and worked as a volunteer with Hospice of the Valley, Decatur, Alabama.

The family wishes to express its sincerest gratitude to Kay’s many friends and caregivers at Riverside Senior Living who were faithfully by her side until the end. We would also like to thank Hospice of the Valley for guiding the family during Kay’s last days.

There will be a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery, 431 North 60th Street, Birmingham, Al. on December 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM officiated by Dr. Jeff Gardner. A celebration of Kay’s life will be at Riverside Senior Living on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 2:00PM with Rev. Richie Thompson officiating. Shelton Funeral Home assisted the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Kay’s memory to Hospice of the Valley, 240 Johnston Street SE, Decatur, Alabama 35602-2399.
