Julian Thomas Whetstone, Sr. 86, ended his earthly stay and began his heavenly journey on Thursday, March 27, 2014 Julian was born in Elmore, Alabama on November 25, 1927. He attended school in Tallassee, Alabama, where he graduated an honor student, Allstate basketball star and completed his 12 years of school with perfect attendance. He entered the Army/Air Force in 1948 and was severely injured during a pre-Korean conflict in 1949. Although a 100% disabled veteran, Julian entered the University of Alabama in 1950 and worked 35 years as an accountant/controller for multiple business and corporations in central Alabama. He, and his wife Janie, moved to Florence, Alabama in 1993 to be closer to their children. He faithfully served as a deacon in several southern Baptist churches and was a former volunteer at ECM Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Priester Whetstone; mother, Annie Lee Gay; father, Aubrey Marion Whetstone; step-father, Wilbur Joseph Gay. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Thrasher Whetstone; children, Janie Leigh Throckmorton (Herb), Julian Thomas Whetson, Jr. (Mellany); grandchildren, Julian Allan Scott (Leah), Christopher Joseph Scott (Erin), Janie Elizabeth Bruce (Charles), and Ryann Whetstone Mitchell (Will); great-grandchildren, Julian and Emily Scott and Spencer Allyn Bruce; sister, Allison Smitherman; and Virginia’s children, Pam Hill, Bobby Thrasher, James Thrasher and Donald Thrasher.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014, at Greenview Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:30p.m.with a graveside service immediately following in Greenview Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Chris Barnett. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Special thanks for the love and care provided by the staff at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital and especially Dr. William Hobbs and Dr. Edsel Holden, who both faithfully and compassionately cared for Julian since he moved to Florence.
