Joy Monroe
April 20, 1934 ~ December 7, 2023 (age 89)

Joy was born in McMinnville, TN to Newell and Daisy Troglen during the depression years. At an early age she was raised by Homer and Rena Hopkins in Meridianville, AL

Joy graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1953. On October 3,1952, Joy became the wife of James (Jim) Monroe in Iuka, MS. They started their life together on the family farm on Monroe Road in Meridianville, AL. and resided there together until Jim’s passing on November 16, 1992, shortly after celebrating their 40th anniversary. Joy and Jim raised 3 children on this family farm, and she has maintained her residence there until her passing. She was active in her children’s school activities serving as room mother, substitute teacher, lunchroom and chaperone to ball players and cheerleader on away games. Joy was the caregiver for husband, Jim, and her mother-in-law, Ann, when their health began to fail keeping them at home. She monitored diet and medications and stayed by Jim’s side while he was in the hospital.  When Jim and Ann passed away, Joy filled her time with grandchildren and began a career in childcare, working at Child Enrichment Center and Best Beginnings until her late 70’s.

Joy became a member of Meridianville Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1980. Joy took an active part in the church being a member of the Lera Harwell Circle and other fellowship activities.

Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Monroe, her parents, her first born child, James “Sonny” Monroe, siblings, Amos Troglen, Ruth McNaron, Murkie Troglen Elrod, her very special brother and his wife, Isaac and Ruth Troglen.

Joy is survived by her children, daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Monroe, her son, Donald “Donny” Monroe (Tamara), daughter-in-law Judy Monroe, her 7 grandchildren, James “Jimmy” Sharp, James “Jamie” Monroe, II (Kayla), Jaclyn Monroe, Jody Monroe, Joy Caitlin Monroe, Jillian “Jill” Monroe, Savannah Monroe, 3 great-grandchildren, Adalynn Monroe, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Monroe, James “JC” Monroe, III.

Visitation will be at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 12:00-2:00.  Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 2pm with Reverend Bobby Eads officiating.   Burial will follow the service and will be in Charity Cemetery.
