Joshua Andrew Karcher

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joshua Andrew Karcher, a beloved son and brother, who left us too soon on August 1, 2024, at the age of 23. Joshua’s departure has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Joshua was born on March 17, 2001, in Atlanta, GA, to his loving parents, Stephen and Cheryl Karcher. With his red hair and mischievous smile, he was the perfect Saint Patrick’s Day baby. From a young age, Joshua showed a remarkable sensitivity and empathy, traits that endeared him to everyone he met. He was a compassionate soul who put others before himself and was known for his infectious laughter and kind heart.
Joshua was a true enthusiast, immersing himself in a variety of passions that spanned sports, music, trivia, and his love for animals. An ardent football fan, he proudly supported his Mississippi State Bulldogs while also harboring a not-so-secret admiration for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Whether cheering from the stands, from the house with his Pi Kappa Alpha comrades, or engaging in spirited virtual debates, Joshua’s passion for sports was a defining aspect of his character.

Gatherings with friends and family were a highlight of Joshua’s life. Bolstered by avid reading in his youth, Joshua’s knowledge of history and all-things trivia made him a formidable opponent in any competitive match, often leading his team to victory with his knowledge of obscure facts. His musical interests were just as expansive, with a playlist that crossed decades and genres. Joshua had the perfect song for any occasion and any audience. He loved connecting with others through group outings around town, as well as staying in with close friends and playing games that would stretch into the early hours of the morning. His adventurous nature was evident in his enthusiasm for trying new foods, whether experimenting in the kitchen with his close friends, discovering a small Chinese bakery on one of many family adventures, or seeking out the best Italian in town.
More than anything, Joshua had a great love for animals, surrounding himself with furry or feathered friends whenever he could (with special fondness for Ellie and Froot Loop). His compassion for animals was reflected in his studies in conservation biology and his years of dedicated volunteer work with a local horse rescue near his hometown of Ball Ground, GA.

Joshua was a steadfast ally and companion to his younger brother, Ben. Their bond was unbreakable, characterized by shared secrets, endless laughter, and many adventures, creating a strong connection that defined both of their lives. From playful sword fights in the living room as children to the no-questions-asked phone calls as adults, they were there for each other as only brothers can be. Joshua’s passing creates a profound absence for Ben, but the love and memories they shared will continue to be a lasting source of comfort and strength.

Joshua was not only a brother but also a devoted partner to Nicole Chastain. Nicole describes Joshua as her “person,” her best friend, and her other half. Every morning, Joshua would bring her caffeinated beverage of choice with a playful encouragement, “Are you ready to be the best teacher ever?” His thoughtful gestures, even when she was not quite ready for the day, brightened her mornings and showed her how important she was to him. Saturdays were their special time, filled with shared meals and moments of connection, as Joshua always knew her favorite orders and of course delighted in the leftovers. As her listener and her supporter, he had a remarkable ability to turn every bad day instantly good and make the good days even better. Although they did not get to do all their plans for life, he showed her what it was to be loved and will forever be her lucky charm.
Despite his vibrant spirit and the love that surrounded him, Joshua battled with deep emotional pain. His struggle was not visible to those who loved him, a testament to his strength and desire to shield others from his own suffering. On August 1, 2024, Joshua’s struggle ended, leaving a legacy marked by love and enduring memories.

Joshua is survived by his younger brother Ben, “the love of his life, best friend, and prettiest girl ever” Nicole Chastain, and his parents, Stephen and Cheryl Karcher. Additionally, his grandmothers, aunts, uncles, fraternity brothers, and numerous friends will cherish his memory. In his absence, there is overpowering silence, but he lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Joshua, though you are no longer with us, your love, laughter, and spirit will continue to inspire and comfort us. Rest in peace, our Leprechaun. You are forever deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to donate to a wildlife conservation organization or animal rescue of your choice in his honor.
Memorial services will be held in both Starkville and Atlanta, and all are welcome to attend, to share your memories and celebrate his life.
