DECATUR-You are invited to join us on Saturday, June 22, 2024, for the First Annual “Judge James E. Horton Day of Courage, ” 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Morgan County Archives, 624 Bank St NE, Decatur, AL 35601.

As we remember the nine Scottsboro Boys who were falsely accused, convicted, and eight of the nine sentenced to death; the program will recognize the bravery of Judge James E. Horton, who on June 22, 1933, courageously overturned Haywood Patterson’s second death sentence, an act that ended his judicial career.

The presentation will reflect on Jurist Horton’s courage to face demands from all sides, threats of death, and to stand on the truths as he did, once saying, “This case is no different from others, We have only to do our duty without fear or favor.” The Honorable Glenn E. Thompson, Retired, Morgan County Circuit Judge will be our speaker.

Following the program participants will have the opportunity to view the Scottsboro Boys exhibit and other items specific to the cases. The program is sponsored by the Decatur Scottsboro Boys Civil Rights Museum Board. Thank you and hope to see you there!
