LEIGHTON-In 1824, people settled in Leighton, many coming from North Carolina and Virginia.
Homes were built, crops were harvested, and craftsmen took care of the needs of the
community. Although not incorporated until 1890, the town was thriving in 1824 and a
post office opened. On September 14-20, 2024 we will celebrate the founding of the
Town of Leighton and we invite you to join us!

A Week of Celebrations

Friday, September 13 – 5 th Quarter Downtown Leighton following the CCHS/Lauderdale
County football game
Sunday, September 15 – 2:00 PM – Music in Bliss Alley featuring songs by Leighton’s
hometown greats, Jimmy Hughes and Percy Sledge with Amanda Brewer and On Time
Band. Storytelling in the Leighton Museum and Leighton Public Library and Birthday
Cupcakes!
Monday, September 16 – The history of Radio History Exhibit in the Leighton Civic
Center and unveiling of the story board/walk at Inspiration Park adjacent to Leighton
Public Library.
Tuesday, September 17 – 2:00 PM – Veterans Ceremony at Town Hall to honor the
Veterans of Leighton.
Wednesday, September 18 – Possible event at Fennel Park with CCHS basketball
team.
Thursday, September 19 – 5:00 Tiny Hiney’s Traveling Farm, food, giveaways, storytime
and more at Leighton Public Library sponsored in part by the Friends of the Leighton
Library.
Friday, September 20 – Join us as we honor the first residents of Leighton with a
ceremony of dance and a celebration of American Indians sponsored in part by
Compelling Stories of the Southeast.
