John Thomas “Tom” Callery, age 80 of Brownsville, TN, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2021 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, TN. A Private Graveside Service will be held on Monday, February 1, 2021 at the Brownsville Memorial Gardens with Dr. Roger Penn and Bro. Grover Westover officiating. Tom was born on October 18 ,1940 in Brownsville, TN to the late Leon and Frances Callery. Tom was in the United States Army and served as a Military Police Officer in the United States and Panama Canal Zone. He was a field director for U.S. Senator Bill Brock. He served as the U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee and retired after 12 years. He also served many roles in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation including assistant to the Commissioner. He retired from the state after 8 years of service. He even worked post retirement at the Brownsville Funeral Home. Tom always said he came full circle by beginning his career at age 14 working at the funeral home where he ended his career. Over the years, he has been on various boards and civic organizations including being a member of the Tennessee Conservation Commission, former President of the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, former President of the Brownsville Rotary Club, served on the Haywood County Election Commission, served as West Tennessee Supervisor for the 1970 census, served on the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission, member of the Brownsville Exchange Club, served on the Board of Directors for the Brownsville – Haywood County Arts Council and served on the Board of Directors for the Haywood Heritage Foundation. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara Marbury Callery of Brownsville, TN; one daughter, JoAnna Morris of Brownsville, TN; one son, John Callery (Ashley) of Oxford, MS; one brother, Ronnie Callery of Brownsville, TN. He leaves a great legacy of love for his four grandchildren, Gray Morris, Graham Morris, Porter Callery and Miller Callery. Pallbearers will be Gray Morris, Graham Morris, Porter Callery, Matthew Williford, Elliott Marbury, J.D. Marbury and Robert Marbury. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be given to the Haywood Heritage Foundation or to the charity of the donor’s choice. All services and arrangements are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.
