John S. Hursh, 99, passed away peacefully, Thursday, December 15, 2022, at NHC Lewisburg.
He was born May 12, 1923, in Dixon, Illinois to the late C.M. and Ada “Shippert” Hursh. He moved to Lewisburg when he was 4 years old, his father was an accountant for Bordens in Lewisburg. He was a high school graduate of Marshall County High School and attended Carson Newman University. He also served in WWII in the Army Air Corp as a weather forecaster. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal during his time in the service. John married his sweetheart Dorothy Pinkston Hursh in 1945, who he was married to for 75 years when she passed away in 2020. After the war, he was employed by the National Weather Service for 41 years, in Miami, Memphis, Nashville, and Leland, MS. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the choir.
He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Nancy (James Lee) McDonough and Pam Pigg, nieces and nephews, David McDonough, Sharon McDonough, Carla McDonough, Patti Pigg, Dottie Liles, Stephen Binkley and Don Binkley. He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Mary Binkley, and nieces Pat Burkey and Jackie Blount.
Visitation for Mr. Hursh will be on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at noon with the service following at 2:00pm with Rev. Robert Montgomery officiating.
