John Russell Hammell, 68, of Rogersville died Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at his residence.
Visitation will be Friday, January 17, 2014, from 6-9 PM at Elkins East Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 18, 2014, 2 PM at Elkins East Chapel with Tommy Calhoun officiating. Burial will be at Civitan Cemetery in Rogersville.
Mr. Hammell served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Era and retired as a Boilermaker from TVA. He was a tireless community volunteer, serving as Captain of the Rogersville Auxiliary Police and Commander of the Rogersville Volunteer Ambulance Service. He was a past president of the Rogersville Dixie Youth Baseball, Rogersville Youth Basketball, and Pee Wee Football. He also served two terms as a Rogersville Town Councilman and was a member of the Rogersville Zoning Board. He was also an avid hunter.
Mr. Hammell was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Lynne Hammell, and his parents, Chauncey and Juanita Hammell of Carmi, Illinois.
Mr. Hammell is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pamela Hammell; daughter, Dana Burbank (Jeff); two sons, Eric Hammell (Amanda) and Jamie Hammell (Leslie); two sisters, Nancy Collins and Rebecca Willett (John); brother, Edward Hammell; eleven grandchildren, Jordan Stepp (Ethan), Brynn Burbank, Ethan Burbank, Sarah Beth Hammell, Katie Hammell, Jackson Hammell, Tristan Hammell, Jennason Hammell, Easton Hammell, Kelton Hammell, and Patton Hammell; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Buttery, Ray Bingman, Danny Jones, Marold Pigg, Wayne Birdwell, Justin Goodwin, Drew Shelton, and Charles Whiteside. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
