John Roy Roten, born on October 17, 1942 in McNairy County, TN to the late James Dewey and Nola Causey Roten, passed away on October 18, 2023 in Corinth, Mississippi at the age of 81 years and 1 day.
Roy was an exceptional individual. For nearly five decades, he devoted his life to Central Woodwork, Inc. in Collierville, TN, where he played a pivotal role in delivering superior doors, windows, and finishings for homes throughout West Tennessee and the surrounding areas. He worked to ensure that every project met the highest standards. Roy’s passion for woodworking extended beyond his professional life; it was also a cherished hobby. To many who knew him well, it was evident that his love for woodworking ran deep.
Beyond his work, Roy had a variety of interests that brought him immense joy. He found solace in hunting and had a green thumb that extended into gardening. But above all else, he could always be counted on as a dedicated individual—someone who understood the value of hard work.
Within the community, Roy made lasting contributions. As a faithful member of Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, he enjoyed the fellowship and encouragement found in worshipping with his church family. Additionally, he was a Mason with the Selmer Lodge and actively volunteered at the Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Those fortunate enough to attend their annual fish fry fundraiser would agree that Roy’s hushpuppies were nothing short of legendary—in fact, he earned the title of “hushpuppy master” among his peers.
Roy cherished his marriage with Sybil Lowrance whom he married on June 10, 1966. Together they not only shared love but also celebrated 57 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Sybil Roten of Selmer, TN; a daughter, Stacie Whitfield and husband Lew of Selmer, TN; sister, Shelbie Jean Richardson of Memphis, TN; sister-in-law, Rebecca Roten of Selmer, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his two brothers, James Robert Roten and Preston Roten, as well as brothers-in-law, Douglas Lowrance and Glen Richardson.
