John Robert Grommes, 69, of Blue Mountain, MS, formerly of Aurora and Hinckley IL., passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, January 1, 2024.
Services Celebrating Johns life will be 3 PM Saturday, January 6, 2024, in the Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home with Nathan Smith officiating. Visitation will be 12 Noon until Service Time on Saturday at the Ripley Funeral Home.
He was united in marriage to his wife of 45 years, Ruby Zinzer Grommes. John is survived by his wife Ruby Grommes, two children, Joseph Grommes (Tara), and Jennie Butler (Matthew), seven grandchildren, Hailey Grommes, Austin and Gracie Kallembach, Shayla and Jorjia Butler, and Cole and Madison Butler, one sister, Sandra Wheelhouse, one very special brother-in-law, John Zinzer (Brenda), three sisters in laws, Sharon Zinzer, Cathie Gregory, and Yvonne Brozenec, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as Papa and everyone’s lifelong Friend.
John is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Laverna Grommes, his in laws, John and Mary Jane Zinzer, brother in laws, James Wheelhouse, Richard Dahlberg, James Gregory, Joseph Millen, and Jeff Zinzer.
John attended Midwest Military Academy in Wheaton Il, before joining his father farming for many years. In earlier years he was a landscaper and truck driver before his employment as a tractor operator with American Tree Service and owing his own business, Grommes Stump Removal. He was a Volunteer Fire Fighter on the Blue Mountain Fire Department.
John was a people person and never met a stranger. He was a believer in hard work and constantly kept his self-busy. He enjoyed work but if you knew John than you understood that his true passion was his family. He strived to be the best “Pops” he could be and found most joy in loving his family and being around friends. His lived a good full life and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Jessica and the Blue Mountain Fire Department, liefling friend, Bob the Farmer, and Stacy at Legacy Hospice. There will be a meal prepared at the Blue Mountain Community Building following the service and everyone is welcome to come and fellowship with the family.
