John Oswald Young, age 90 of Estill Springs, passed away on June 13, 2024, at Elk River Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Montpelier, Louisiana on April 28, 1934, to the late OW “Hot Wire” and Dorothy (Conley) Young. John had been the owner and operator of Young’s Market, a family business his father purchased, for over thirty years. Known as the “Mayor of Duncan Town”, friends and family enjoyed his great personality, infectious smile, and sense of humor, as well as his kind and giving nature. In his spare time, John enjoyed riding around and collecting trinkets. He also enjoyed reading funny joke books and often used them in his tales, as he was a master storyteller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Young; and sister, Jean Brown Jun Shtrick. John is survived by his sister, Isabelle Trebing; niece, Shannon Sloan Wright; nephew, Justin Bruce Sloan; long-time friend, Mary Reed; special friend and caregiver, Annette Perry; Shayn Rossman and Kayvan Perry, whom he thought of as grandchildren; and the staff at Elk River Nursing Center that took such wonderful care of him. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Bro. Chris Seals officiating.
