John O. Hardiman – Obituary

John O. Hardiman M.D. age 91 of Florence passed away on Sunday August 7, 2016.  Visitation will be Wednesday August 10, 2016 from10:00am till 10:45am at the First Presbyterian Church of Florence with a memorial service starting at 11:00am at the church with Rev. Brandon Miles and Dr. Jim Thompson officiating.

 

He is preceded in death by his brothers Bill Hardiman and Paul Hardiman.

 

John is survived by his wife of 68 years Martha Anne Hardiman. Daughter Nancy Jean Ellis.  Grandaughter Katie Ellis.  Nieces, Betsy Bass Bobo (Herb) and Julie Bass Berry,  Lynn Hardiman, Harriet and Leslie Hardiman.  Nephew Bill Hardiman.   Sister-in-law Betty Jo Hardiman.  And his beloved dog, Tristan.

 

John was a beloved husband, uncle, brother, friend and retired Ophthalmology physician.

 

His medical career took him on a journey of rotating internship with JohnGaston Hospital, Memphis, TN,  A three year residency combined program with the University of Tennessee, Memphis Eye and EarHospital, and City of Memphis Hospitals. He had a private practice inFlorence, Alabama until he retired.

 

He lived life to the fullest and was a member of the Greatest Generation serving in the combat infantry as a World War II veteran. He was a SCCA licensed race car driver and National Chief Steward Boat Captain, power and sail and raced sailboats.  He was an Amateur radio operator (WA4OCM), a commercial pilot, Single/multi engine, glider and CAP Command Pilot and Alabama Wing Chief of Staff.  He served as Chmn on the Salvation Army Advisory Board as well as Chmn of the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts Volunteers.  He also served as an Alabama State Trooper Auxiliary Lt.
