John Michael Crawford passed away on January 30, 2025. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 29, 1948, and was a resident of the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville at his death. He will be interred at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama, at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Delois Crawford of Florence, Alabama; stepdaughter, Tamila Bumback of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; and her two children, Katie Cole and Luke Bumback, also of Tinton Falls; two stepsons, George VonBruton and Joe Tyra, both of Florence; and Joe’s children, Anna Tyra of Florence, and Caleb Tyra of Albany, Georgia. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Cindy Johnson (Bob) of Harpersville, Alabama; and other beloved family members. He also leaves to cherish his memory two dear friends, Pete and Jo Bolen of Huntsville.

John was a Marine, serving in Vietnam from 1967-1969. He was very proud of his military service and always appreciative when people thanked him for his service. He enjoyed attending Veterans Day observances on November 11, though he was always quick to point out November 10 should also be celebrated, because it was the founding date for the Marines in 1775.

Memorials in John’s honor can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Disabled American Veterans.

John was in ill health for many years and suffered much pain. We rejoice he is free from pain and in heaven with his Lord (and probably wearing one of his many Marine caps). Rest in peace, John. Semper Fi.
