John Joseph Nelson, Jr., a loving family member, a dedicated employee, and a proud veteran, passed away on December 1, 2023, at the age of 75. Born on March 5, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John had a profound impact on the lives of those who knew him and will be deeply missed.
John dedicated much of his life to his career. He worked at Bellsouth for an impressive 28 years before transitioning to work for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. His commitment and work ethic were truly commendable. Throughout his professional journey, John demonstrated integrity and dedication that inspired those around him.
Aside from his successful career, John valued education. He graduated from Dade County High School in Homestead, Florida and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a Master’s Degree at Nova University. John’s passion for learning was insatiable, and he constantly sought opportunities to expand his horizons.
During his younger years, John selflessly served as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War. His invaluable contributions and sacrifice made a lasting impact on his fellow soldiers and fellow countrymen alike. John’s military service was a testament to his courage and love for his country.
Outside of work and military service, John had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He was known for his dedication to fitness and spent much of his time at the gym, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, he had an avid love for reading and was often seen with a book in hand.
John cherished his family dearly. He is survived by his loving wife Karen as well as his sister Eilleen Sparkman (Larry). His children Laura Cook (Daniel) and David Faulk (Melody) brought immense happiness into his life. John adored being a grandfather to Ella, Lily & Anna Cook; Zayiah & Aiziahlyn Kjelstrom, and took great joy in watching them grow. He was a proud uncle to his nieces Karen Brindle (Bill) and Denise Gallagher (Danny).
A man of integrity and kindness, John was always willing to lend a helping hand and provide guidance to those in need. His wisdom, compassion, and generosity will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Services to honor and celebrate John’s life will be held as follows: A visitation will take place on December 6, 2023, at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison, Alabama from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A memorial service will follow at the same location from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM. Interment will occur on December 7, 2023, at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at 1:00 PM.
