John Joel “Shotgun” Shumpert, Sr.

Joel "Shotgun" Shumpert Profile Photo John Joel “Shotgun” Shumpert, Sr., 81, passed away on November 7, 2023 at NMMC- Gilmore in Amory.  He was born on October 17, 1942, raised and lived most all of his life in the Carolina Community.  His parents were the late John Lee and Evelene Boozer Shumpert.  Joel attended school at the old Carolina School House and high school at IAHS.  For a number of years he was in the refrigeration business and later retired from Cooper Tire.  Anyone that knew Shotgun, knew his second home was the hills, hollers, creeks and rivers of Itawamba and Monroe Counties.  He spent many days with friends and family fishing and hunting.  He especially enjoyed crappie fishing and rabbit hunting.  Joel was also a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Faye Shumpert; sons, Jay Shumpert (Tammy), Chad Shumpert and Corey Shumpert, all of Carolina Community;  step grandchildren, Joshua Tiner and MaKayla Weston Duncan (Isaac).

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Noel Shumpert.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 10, 2023 at Cleveland Moffett Funeral Home in Amory with Bro. Rickey Pierce officiating.  Burial will follow in Wiygul Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Chris Gillentine, Chris McMillan, Tim Brooks, Larry Moore, Randy Carpenter, Tommy Todd, Mike Scott and Ben Moore.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, November 9, 2023 at Cleveland Moffett Funeral Home from 5-7 PM.
