John Herndon John (Fred) Frederick Herndon, 76, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Friday, December 16, 2022, at the Williamsport Retirement Village. Born Thursday, December 12, 1946 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Jesse Alton Herndon and the late Bessie M. (Johnson) Herndon Ridgely. He attended Baltimore City College High School in Baltimore, MD and later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965. He was employed with the Baltimore City Police Department for 32 years, retiring as Detective Sergeant. John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #003 in Baltimore, MD. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 120 in Taneytown, MD. He is survived by his wife Mary Isabella Herndon; son, John F. (Rosie) Herndon, Jr., daughter, Lisa L. (Jason) LaGiglia, son, Derek M. (Amy) Herndon, daughter, Denise C. (Brian) Essich, daughter, Jacqueline M. Tillcock, daughter, Tammy R. (Joseph) Steiss, and daughter, Karen M. Sparzak; sisters, Shirley Cover, Kay Sheckells, and Coleen Davis; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesse Herndon, Jr. and Charles Herndon. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and one hour prior to the service to be held Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 12:00 pm, at the Greenhill Funeral Home.Interment will be at the Greenhill Cemetery in Greenhill, AL on December 29, 2022.
