John Earl McNeal Jr, lovingly known as “LJ”, passed away on Saturday. LJ was a loving and devoted son, brother, grandson and friend. He was currently a student at the University of Tennessee (and was passionate about everything UT) majoring in business and looking forward to serving his country in the National Guard.
He was a 2023 graduate of Hazel Green High School and, as a passionate music lover, had served as the drum major for the Trojan Marching Band.
John was preceded in death by his grandmother, Brenda Quails. His great-grandmothers: Lucille McNeal and Lois Quails.
Surviving family members include LJ’s parents, John & April McNeal; His sister, Gracie McNeal; his grandparents, Johnny & Annette McNeal; his uncle, Jared McNeal; his cousin, Emma McNeal; his great-grandparents: Earl & Martha Brady; his girlfriend, Maya Johns and his best friend, Noah Flores. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5pm until 8pm and again on Saturday at 1pm until service time at Hazel Green Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow Saturday at 2pm at the funeral home followed by a committal service in Rice Cemetery In New Market.
LJ will be remembered for his kind heart, his sense of humor that delighted in bringing a smile to his friends, and for his giftedness as a leader – always helping others be their best. He had a sincere love for those around him, was a true gentleman, driven and motivated, and always approached life with a positive attitude. He was fearless and was always planning his next project or adventure.
