John Douglas Pennington, born on February 19, 1947 in Panama City, Florida, passed away on December 13, 2023 in Huntsville, Alabama. He was the son of the late John Hulon (Red) Pennington and Mary Fay Ketner.
John attended elementary school in Pennsylvania and high school in Virginia. He attended Calhoun Community College in Decatur. John was a Vietnam Veteran and one of the presidents of the local chapter #74 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He escorted this group to the memorial in Washington DC in 1980’s.
He loved to sing during the 1970s and 1980s at various local bars, pubs as well at church. He was also an avid APA Pool league member for over 25 years and in his better days enjoyed riding his Harley trike with his wife and friends. He was known for loving God, Country, Family and the Marines as well as being a loving friend to many people.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Gordon Pennington.
His survivors include his wife Sandra J. Pennington; daughters Yvonne (Charles) Tafoya, Lonnie Holder and Lea Rastetter; grandson Charles Tafoya II (Presley); great granddaughter Naomi Tafoya; sisters Mary (Pug) Oliver and Drinda Pennington as well as many loving nieces and nephews and cousins along with a large number of friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 17th, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Hazel Green Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, December 18th at 1:00 pm at Hazel Green Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Rice Cemetery, New Market, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vietnam Veterans Association or Marines Toys for Tots as well as the local charity of the 8th Street Community.
