John Dee (J.D.) Glover, Jr. of Lexington, AL died at age 87 on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 1pm. He was by all accounts an extraordinary man. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama, after which he taught grade school in both Anderson and Monrovia, AL. He retired from Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Power Plant, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as a Senior Reactor Operator (after which he was recalled to serve more than 11 times).
J.D. was a farmer throughout his life. He was a church leader, a mentor, and friend to anyone who would lend an ear. He was a long time member of the Lexington United Methodist Church.
J.D. was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Delphine Michael Glover (Lexington, AL); parents John Dee Glover, Sr. and Sallie Ann Glover (Lexington, AL); and brother George Waylon Glover (Tullahoma, TN).
J.D. is survived by his wife Rebecca Sue Glover (Lexington, AL); sons Colonel Charles W. Glover. , (wife, Judy Glover, Madison, AL) and David W. Glover, Ph.D. (wife, Doreen Glover, Killen, AL); sister, Agnes Hooie (husband, Lavon Hooie, Columbia, TN); sister-in-law, Faye Glover (Tullahoma, TN); and step-sons, Luther Shelton (wife, Shelley Shelton, Lexington, AL) and Barry Shelton (wife, Dawn Shelton, Lexington, AL).
In addition, J.D. is survived by grandchildren, Lorie G. Dawson, M.D. (husband, Charlie “Buddy” H. Dawson, III, Ph.D., Madison, AL) and Lisa M. Glover, M.S. (Madison, AL); step-grandchildren, Caden Shelton, Cale Shelton, Ally Shelton, and Carter Shelton (Lexington, AL); and great-grandchildren Thomas Dawson and William Dawson (Madison, AL).
Further, J.D. is survived by his brothers-in-law, Edgar Michael (wife, Juanita, Killen, AL), Allison Michael (Pompano Beach, FL), Alvin Jackson (Killen, AL) and David Morrison, (wife, Doris, Anderson, AL) ; sisters-in-law, Imogene “Jean” Bostick (husband, Lebert Bostick, Killen, AL), Mary Thacker, (husband, Harrell, Rogersville, AL), Margaret Weathers, (Anderson, AL) and June Bailey, (husband, Mickey, Anderson, AL), and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be at Lexington United Methodist Church (Lexington, AL) on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 10am until 12pm. Funeral services will begin at 12pm, Lexington United Methodist Church. Burial will follow immediately at Tri Cities Memorial Gardens (Florence, AL).
Reverend Sam Hayes will officiate over all services; the family will be assisted by Elkins Funeral Home, East Chapel (Killen, AL).
Pallbearers include Charlie “Buddy” H. Dawson, III, Luther Shelton, Barry Shelton, John Sparks, Harold Thacker, and Mickey Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Caden Shelton, Carl Holden, and the deacons of the Lexington United Methodist Church.
The family expresses special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff, Huntsville Hospital.
