John Braxton Mountain, Sr., 76, of Huntsville, AL passed away peacefully on Saturday at Huntsville Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty Mayo Mountain, his father, Albert Lyle Mountain and mother, Winnie Boak Mountain, two half-brothers: Al Mountain and Albert Mountain, and his stepmother, Bonnie McCormick Mountain.
Mr. Mountain was a member of Mensa and earned his Bachelor’s degree from UAH and two graduate degrees from Georgia Tech. He was the Director of Information Management of MICOM until his first retirement then worked for several federal contractors with the last position being Vice President of NCCIM before he retired again. After his retirement, he was an active member of Kiwanis until health issues precluded his further involvement.
He is survived by three children: John B. Mountain, Jr. (wife, Lisa), Stephen W. Mountain, Beverly Mountain Ames (husband, Marc), three granddaughters: Jordan Ames, Rachel Ames and Emily Craig Mountain; one brother, Clinton Delaine Mountain, Sr. (wife, Barbara) and two stepbrothers: Thurman McCormick, Ron McCormick (wife, Helen), sister-in-law, Judy Mayo York and special friend, Delilah Stites. He was blessed with numerous nieces and nephews as well. He was a generous man with a quick wit that will be missed by family and friends.
The visitation and service will be held on Wednesday, September 3, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m. with the memorial service at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation or American Diabetes Association.
