John Alvin Martz, 84, of Huntsville, passed away March 10, 2025.

Mr. Martz graduated in the Class of 1959 at Huntsville High School. Afterwards, he attended Auburn University.  Mr. Martz then entered the US Navy and became a Radioman assigned to the USS Enterprise from 1960-61.

He was part of the team responsible for the planning and design for the Alabama Constitution Hall Historic Park and Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

Mr. Martz had a love for steam trains, astronomy, and history, especially the history of Northern Alabama and the Tennessee Valley.

He was an avid reader and collector, he could never have enough books.  He was also a lifelong volunteer at the county library.

Mr. Martz is survived by five nieces and nephews: Beth Martz Ivey, Susan Martz Nichols, Randy Wallis, Jim Martz, and Brett Wallis.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Jimerson Martz; mother, Annie Lou (Ray) Martz; and siblings, William Leslie Martz and Doris Elisabeth Martz Wallis.

No services are planned.  Berryhill Funeral Home assisted the family.
