After a long productive life, Joe W. Ellis transformed to his eternal home from Huntsville Hospital after a period of declining health. He was 91 years old. Joe was born in the Pontocola Community to the late Emmett Ellis and Annie Patterson Ellis. A patriotic American, Joe served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict period. Like his family before him, Joe spent his life in the building construction industry, first as a brick layer then as a home construction and repair master carpenter. Joe spent his last 10 years before retirement as a Construction Manager for Habitat for Humanity. Joe lived much of his later life in Alabama including Haleyville, Cullman and Decatur from 1972 until his death. He was very active in the Decatur retirement community. Joe, more than anything, loved his son and daughter with a boundless enthusiasm. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, AL.
A private family service celebrating his life will be held at Saturday, March 2, 2024.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his two children, Joe Ellis of Washington, D.C. and Cheri Ellis Schekman and her husband, Tracey of Southern California; the mother of his children, Sarah B. Ellis of Decatur, AL; his grandson, Noah Schekman of Southern California; a sister, Betty Ann Vinson of Louisiana; his sisters in law, Nancy, Marilyn and Gen Ellis; numerous nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Annie Patterson Ellis and his brothers, Skeet, Bobby, Jake and Ronnie Ellis.
