Joe L Anglin, Jr.
Joe was born in Athens, AL over 89 years ago to Joe L. Anglin, Sr. and Eliza Pack Anglin. He grew up in Athens, Calera and Monrovia, AL. Joe graduated from Monrovia High School in Madison County, AL. After graduating with a BS Degree from Jacksonville College (Jacksonville, AL), he was commissioned into the US Army where he served in the 6th Army and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He later received a Masters in Education from Troy State College (Troy, AL).

 

Joe had a long career beginning with two summers in Idaho with the US Forestry Service. He taught school and coached at Hazel Green, Sparkman and Huntsville High School where he developed numerous lifelong relationships with students and players. He coached several sports but eventually concentrated on basketball.

 

He left coaching to pursue School Administration where he served as Assistant Principal (1971 – 1972) and then Principal of Huntsville High School from 1972 – 1988. During his tenure at Huntsville High School, they were awarded the Bellamy Flag Award, a prestigious National award, which annually recognizes the top school in a different state. He served as Superintendent of Madison County and Athens City School Systems before his retirement in 1998.

 

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Athens, AL where he taught a Men’s Sunday School Class for many years and developed long lasting friendships.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Eliza Anglin; his wife of 62 years, Ann Dew Cole Anglin; his brother, JC Anglin and his sister, Opal Taylor.

 

He is survived by a sister, Millie Anglin; and two sons, Philip Dirk Anglin (Cynthia) and Gary Spencer Anglin; and grandchildren, Spencer, Jackson and Sadie Anglin.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, 2320 Bob Wallace Ave. SW, Huntsville, AL 35805. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM with Larry Smith officiating. Burial will in Huntsville Memory Gardens.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to your favorite charity organization.
