Joe Hill passed away on the morning of February 24, 2023, at Jackson-Madison Co. General Hospital.
He was born February 28, 1942, in Macon, Mississippi, and grew up in nearby Artesia. He graduated from Macon High School and attended East Mississippi Jr. College until he enlisted with the United States Air Force in 1961. Joe was stationed at Chennault AFB, Lake Charles, LA then spent most of duty at Homestead AFB, Miami, FL.
After his service he began work with the US Postal System in Jackson, TN. He served in many capacities over his 38 years in postal work, with his last several as Postmaster of Beech Bluff, TN. He was a member of the Church of Christ last attending services with membership at Henderson Church of Christ.
In the last few years he has worshipped remotely with the East Jackson congregation. Joe was a long-time member of Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club where he was an avid golfer until his health no longer allowed him to play. He still enjoyed going to visit his friends there as often as he could.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe S. Hill, Sr. and Frances Hill Bowden, and by his wife, Barbara Bain Hill.
He is survived by his daughter, Karmala Kimberlin (Terry), his granddaughters, Alesha Fincher (Ryan), Hillary Ingram (Chance), and Linsey Pugh (Justin) and five grandchildren, Addi, Ella, Chip, Colt, and George. Other survivors include his siblings, Pat Phillips (Lee Roy) of Starkville, MS, Linda White (Don) of Germantown, TN, Freddie Hill and Stacy Hill both of Jackson, TN.
He also leaves behind 2 especially faithful lifetime friends that were like brothers to him, Johnny and Jerry Mitchener of Macon and Columbus, MS respectively, as well as a large Hill family that he loved so dearly.
Services for Joe will be at George A. Smith and Sons South Chapel on February 27 with visitation at 11:00 and funeral at 1:00 led by his nephew, Lee Phillips. The burial will be in Rocky Springs Cemetery.
