Joe Glenn “Papa Joe” Lewis Sr. went to be with his family Wednesday. Mr. Lewis was born December 23, 1932, at the end of the Great Depression. He knew the significance of hard work. He traveled the 48 continental states and made many friends along the way. He served in theĀ Korean War, and returned to South Korea years later as a nuclear power start-up engineer. He enjoyed conversations, easy listening music, good gospel music, and good humor. He was a master gardener, and a living book of knowledge. He watched Fox News, NASCAR, racing and SEC football. He never turned down help if you offered it, but I WILL, never cut it – JUST DO IT. He loved his family very much, but most importantly, he loved God and believed in Salvation. Mr. Lewis was a member of First Baptist Church, Athens.
Services will be Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Teal and Don Ricketts officiating. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from noon until service time.
He is survived by his sons, Joe Lewis Jr. of Texas, Earl Lewis of Toney and Darryl Lewis of Athens; daughters, Yun Lee Lewis of Ardmore and Su Lee Savage of Auburn, Ky.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Ann Bell of Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jake Lewis, Will Lewis, Curtis Lewis, Bobby Lewis, Burt Winkle and Josh Savage.
