Joann S. Abbott, age 94, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Saturday, November 04, 2023, at NHC Healthcare of Scott in Lawrenceburg, TN.

Joann was the eldest of four children. Joann attended St. Thomas School of Nursing and graduated from Nashville General Hospital School of Nursing. Joann and her three siblings were blessed to attend college and receive degrees during difficult times. She was supervisor of nurses at Lawrence County Hospital, worked as a nurse in Murray Ohio’s dispensary, and assisted in developing procedure and practice for the Brink Street Nursing Home. Her other achievements include holding membership in the Lawrenceburg Cotillion Club, past president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, began local Stephens Ministry at Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member and served on many committees. Joann was always an advocate willing to reach out, support and help her community, friends, and family. She often guided many self help groups in her community. Joann had a personal home library in which she often read and offered self help books to all. Joann was a co-owner with one of her husbands “Bud” businesses where she made a multitude of bologna sandwiches at the well known Bologna Palace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Garold Morton and Retha Marie Aker Stotser; her husband, James Morgan “Bud” Abbott, Sr.; two brothers, Don M. Stotser and George R. Stotser; one sister, Patsy Stotser Parkes; and one grandson, James Bradley Abbott.

She is survived by one son, James Morgan “Jim” Abbott, Jr., Lawrenceburg, TN; one daughter, Lisa Ann Abbott Pope and husband, Roger Dale Pope of Florence, AL; three grandchildren, Christopher Michael Abbott (April), Alexander Clarke “Alex” Pope (Olivia), and Caroline Ann Pope; five great-grandchildren, Alyxandria McLain, Ryder Stone, Caydence Abbott, Sawyer Pope, and Judsen Pope; several nieces and nephews. Those serving as pallbearers are Chad Moore, Jimmy Prentice, Chris Abbott, Chris Blalock, Alex Pope, and Josh Lowry.

A special thank you to all the staff of NHC Scott and Unity Hospice for the excellent care given to Joann. Also, a big thanks to the staff at The Summit.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 14, 2023, with Kevin Marston and John Horne officiating. Interment will follow at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg, TN. The family suggests memorials be made to Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church, 322 North Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464.
