Jo Kate Scruggs, 91, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Sanctuary Hospice House. She was born November 27, 1925, to George Watson and Florence Bain McMahan in Tupelo.
Jo Kate lived in Tupelo throughout her life where she graduated from Tupelo High School. In 1943, she married her husband James P. Scruggs, who was a Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Jo Kate worked as a florist at Rutherford’s Floral Shop which later became French’s. She enjoyed camping with her husband, spending time with her family and attending her Sunday School class at First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Scruggs (Linda) of Tupelo; daughter, Janice Humphres (Larry) of Tupelo; grandchildren, D. D. Maricle (Joe) of Denver, Susan Bowen (Wes) of Eads, Tennessee, Jay Scruggs (Amanda) of Tupelo, Leanne Howell (Lee) of Germantown, Tennessee, Leslie Key (Shawn) of Calera, Alabama, Matt Humphres of Tupelo and Makayla Humphres of Tupelo; great-grandchildren, Christopher Maricle, William Bowen, Caroline Bowen, John Bowen, Mack Scruggs, Mary Scruggs, Samuel, Henry and Julia Howell and Morgan Key.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James P. Scruggs in 1994; son, Ronny Scruggs of Tupelo and sisters, Allie Knight of Tupelo and Hazel Robbins of Huntsville, Alabama.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Jefferson Street Chapel with Rev. Archie Tafflinger officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jay Scruggs, Matt Humphres, William Bowen and Mack Scruggs.
