JimmyJimmy Dail “J.D.” Gilley, 74, of Spruce Pine, passed away from his family and this life into his loving Savior’s hands on Friday, October 18, 2013.

Mr. Gilley, J.D., as he was known, was a beloved husband, daddy, grandfather (Papa), brother, uncle, and friend. He was a hard worker who was always willing to lend others a helping hand.

To his family, he was a carpenter, doctor, farmer, fire fighter, mechanic, electrician, advisor, boat captain, and a wonderful story teller. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and cherished him. Mr. Gilley was an active member of Spruce Pine Baptist Church, and a retired poultry farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Levi Gilley & Ila Nix Gilley.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Motes Gilley; children, Tammy Gilley James, Mike Gilley (wife, Connie), Karla Gilley and Bridget Allison; grandchildren, Chris James (wife, Stephanie), Brandon James (wife, Courtney), Heather Galloway (husband, Brian), Hannah James, John Tyler Gilley; great-grandchildren, Austin, Coban, & Hudsen James; Samantha Darby; Kaeli and Brennan James, Makenzie, DaKota, & Meredyth Galloway; brother, Bill Gilley (wife, Pat); step-mother, Jane Gilley; several nieces & nephews; and a host of special friends.

The pallbearers will be Chris James, Brandon James, John Tyler Gilley, Levi Gilley, Caleb Gilley, Brian Galloway, Jimmy Mitchell, and Austin James. The honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Taylor, Hewitt Johnston, Danny McKinney, Tom Rupley, and Ernie Presley.

The visitation will be 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Spruce Pine Baptist Church, with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Bro. Jim Poss and Bro. Kent Walker. Burial will be at Spruce Pine Cemetery. A meal for the family will follow at the church.

The family would like to give special recognition to Southern Care Hospice. A special thanks to Kristen Miller, Ruby Sheffield, Cindy Williams, Dr. Lynn Ridgeway, and Dr. Loren McCoy. Mr. Gilley considered each one a special friend, and he and the family were grateful for their special care.

Spry Memorial Chapel assisted the family.
