Jimmy Arthur Pounders, age 87, of Muscle Shoals, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 18, from 10-noon at Spry-Williams Funeral Home, with the service to follow at noon in the funeral home chapel. Dr. Tom Whatley will officiate with a eulogy to be given by Jim Holland.
Mr. Pounders was a deacon at Woodward Avenue Baptist Church where he worked extensively with youth through the Royal Ambassadors Program. He was a member of American Legion Post 31 and the Washington Masonic Lodge. Mr. Pounders was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II where he earned the Bronze Star.
Mr. Pounders was predeceased by his wife, Martha Mary Pearl Hovater Pounders; parents, William Jefferson Pounders and Mary Frances Jackson Pounders; siblings, Florence L. Pounders, Samuel Claude Pounders, Millie Paralee Pounders, Annie Mae Pounders, Lurly Lorene Pounders, Gladys Magdelene Pounders, William JT Pounders and Billy Elbert Pounders.
Survivors include son, Jack Karl Pounders and wife, Sissy, of Florence; daughters, Connie Jill Pounders and husband, Larry Stevens, of Point Harbor, N.C., and Agatha Kay Helms and husband, Michae,l of Pelham, Ala.; grandchildren, Katherine Ann Helms Kellert, Mollie Michelle Helms Durbin, Martha Taylor Pounders Johnson and husband, Andrew, Jordan Karl Pounders and wife, Melissa “Mimi”, and John Brooks Pounders; great-grandchildren, Tessa Abigail Durbin and Andrew Caleb Johnson II.
Pallbearers will be Phil Smith, Vertis Driver, Gary Pounders, Roger Bradford, Doug Posey and Roland Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Bradford, Robert McDowell, Dwayne Posey and Jack Laster.
