As one might expect, with a name like “Jewel”, friends and family adopted the nickname “Buddy”. It stuck with him in the small community of Snowtown where he was raised, attending both Bessie Elementary and West Jefferson High School.

For over 30 years, he worked as a grocer for Foodland in their Sumiton, Gardendale and Hueytown stores. After retiring, his full time job included being Papa to his six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Every October, he took his sons fishing to Wheeler Dam and every year both grandchildren and great friends enjoyed tailing along for the week long adventure.

Buddy was not a man of many words, but he was a man of many talents. He taught his sons to play guitar, sing and many other things. He said how much he loved you in other ways! He will be sorely missed by many, especially by his best friend and dog, “Champs.” Even though we will miss him, we take comfort in knowing that we will indeed see him again when we reach or heavenly home.
