Janice Anita Polk Goodgine, 74, wife of Tom Fortenberry, retired employee of South Central Bell, and resident of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 1, 2024 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Brother J. J. King officiating. Burial will follow in Sparkman Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
Born June 25, 1950 in Franklin, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late John Herbert Polk and the late Louise Johnson Polk. On December 13, 1997 she married Thomas Earl “Tom” Fortenberry. Mrs. Goodgine was an avid basketball fan, and enjoyed antiques. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother; and was of the Christian Faith.
In addition to her husband, Janice is survived by her two sons, William Corey (Lisa) Goodgine and John Clay Goodgine; three step-daughters, Christina (Scott) Sullivant, Athena (Jim) Patterson, and Tommie (Craig) Allen; grandchildren, Nichole (Nathan) Daniel and Kayla (Colton) Emler; great-grandchildren, Easton, Kennedy, Tate, and Hailey; step-grandchildren, Alexa Sullivant, Griffin Sullivant, Owen Sullivant, Ellie Allen, Reuben Allen, and Emelia Allen; sister, Lela Allen; brother, Thomas (Tiny) Polk; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janice also leaves behind many dear friends. Phyllis Carter, Her closest friend since the first grade, was there by her side at the hospital when she passed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one of her most beloved granddaughters, Maddox Claire Goodgine; and sisters, Dallas Pratt, and Betty Reed.
Pallbearers will be Griffin Sullivant, Owen Sullivant, Reuben Allen, Jackson Carter, Colton Emler, and Nathan Daniel.
