Jane Bugg was born in 1933 in Gadsden, to the late Tom Ben Dake, Sr. and Hazel Moore Dake, and grew up in Gadsden. She graduated from Gadsden High School in the class of 1950. Upon graduation she served as the secretary of First United Methodist Church before her marriage to George Gordon Bugg, a West Point graduate in the U.S. Army from Altoona, Alabama. Jane lived away from Gadsden with her husband on various military assignments. She took an active part in the church and community activities at each station to which her husband was posted, including attending the wives’ portion of the Strategic Intelligence School in Washington, D.C. and then representing the United States in her duties as the wife of the Assistant Army Attaché to Portugal. While her husband served as Director of Personnel at Ft. Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, she served as Post Nursery Chairman, Coordinator and Red Cross Volunteer, Girl Scout coordinator of troops at Ft. Gordon, Girl Scout Board of Directors for the Augusta area, and Brownie troop leader. Upon her husband’s retirement as a U.S. Army Colonel in 1973, the family returned to Gadsden where Mrs. Bugg continued to be active in her children’s school and with her church.
Mrs. Bugg was the first Director of Lay Activities and the first Leader of The Stephen Ministry of Gadsden’s First United Methodist Church. She centered her life in her church and through the years served in a number of offices in the church, including service on the Board of Stewards and as Chairman of the United Methodist Women.
When preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Jane moved from Gadsden to Auburn, Alabama, and was affiliated with Auburn United Methodist Church. She was active there in the Celebration Circle and enjoyed the fellowship with the ladies. After a dozen years in Auburn, Jane moved to Atlanta and lived with and was cared for by her daughter.
Jane was a beloved mother, Grandy, Auntie and friend, and she will be greatly missed.
