Dr. Roberts was born on March 26, 1951 to Eloitte and Ella Mae Roberts in Morgan County, Alabama. He attended Morgan County High School and graduated in 1969. His further education was completed at Samford University, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Columbia Theological Seminary where he earned his Doctorate in Ministry.
In his forty year career in ministry he served as a chaplain and a pastor. In Huntsville, he was the pastor at Hope Presbyterian Church and completed his active ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, West Virginia. In retirement, Dr. Roberts served as the Parish Associate at First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville. Having a great desire to help others, he has served on a variety of boards and committees. These have included the boards of The Vine Counseling Center, the Presbyterian Home for Children, the Interfaith Mission Service, and founding board of the Huntsville Assistance Program. Dr. Roberts has also traveled extensively to participate in various mission projects and to study with some of the great theologians.
Jim was passionate about his family and valued his friendships immensely. He found joy and contentment in spending time with his loved ones, Auburn football, working in his yard and gardens, traveling, the beach, and continuously evolving and growing his spirituality through reflection, reading, and researching.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sonny Roberts.
Dr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Diane. He is also survived by his son Bart (Carolyn) Roberts, his daughters Alison Johnson and Anna (Mo)Araiinejad. His grandchildren Leyla Johnson, Andrew Roberts, Rogan and Jordee Araiinejad. His sister, Bonnie (Derwin) Teichmiller. He also cherished his nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was loved by all of them more than this world will ever know.
A celebration of his life will be held on March 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama officiated by Rev. Dr. Tara Bulger and Rev. Brett Gudeman. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
