James “Ray” Fretwell

Ray Fretwell James “Ray” Fretwell, age 79, of Russellville, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 peacefully with his family around him.

Ray proudly served in the U.S. National Guard. He was a diehard Alabama Football and Atlanta Braves fan. He loved to watch westerns on TV but especially loved to watch his grandchildren play their various sports. He had a strong faith in God and had sung with The Believers in Christ. He enjoyed spending time with his best friend, Mousey Brown. He served Franklin County for decades by having his local gas stations where he was loved by everyone, and you always left his store with a smile.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jean Taylor Fretwell; granddaughter, Ashley Murray; parents, James Bascomb & Lassie (Smith) Fretwell; siblings, Bobby Fretwell, Charles Fretwell, Larry Fretwell, John Fretwell, Shirley Canup, and Gladys Cornett.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Tina Murray (Jeff); his son, Chris Fretwell (Kari);
grandchildren, Christopher Fretwell, Haven Fretwell, Jacob Fretwell, Adam McCluskey (Paige), Alex McCluskey (Lauren), Masen Willingham, Morgan Willingham (Braden), Maggie Willingham Moore (Logan), Hunter Murray; great-grandchildren, Samuel McCluskey, Caroline McCluskey, Hudson Murray, Mercy Murray, A.J. McCluskey, Indy Mitchell, Kipp Hester; siblings, Benny Fretwell (Kathie), Gary Fretwell (Brenda), Ronald Fretwell (Renee), Randy Fretwell, Denise Pounders; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Spry Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Spry Memorial Chapel with Bro. Thomas Thornton officiating the service. The burial will be at Franklin Memory Gardens.

The pallbearers will be Dr. Keith Morrow, Christopher Fretwell, Adam McCluskey, Alex McCluskey, Shane Fretwell, and Jeff Fretwell. The honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Fretwell, Masen Willingham, Samuel McCluskey, A.J. McCluskey, and Milford “Mousey” Brown.
