James Mitchell Blackwood, 97, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, June 13, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur.
Mr. Blackwood is survived by his daughters, Patti Lovelady (Rob), Cathy Bodley (Greg); grandchildren, Carrie Bonham (Steven), Captain Zachary Bodley United States Army, and Catherine Bodley; great grandchildren, Brady Bonham, Cooper Bonham and Kenzie Bonham, and sister Donna Woods (Steve).
He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Betty Green Blackwood and his parents James Coleman Blackwood and Nena Retta Blackwood.
Mr. Blackwood served in World War II as an Army Corporal and was retired from Wolverine Tube. He was an avid bowler and bowled in several leagues, which he enjoyed until he was 95. He was a regular each week at the Decatur Senior Center, where he loved playing pool and spending time with his friends. He faithfully attended Ninth Street United Church for many years and, after its closure, Austinville United Methodist Church.
Mr. Blackwood was a devoted husband and caregiver to his late wife until medical issues took her out of their home. Even then, he spent each evening at Riverside Senior Living to visit with her and watch television, especially Wheel of Fortune, until her bedtime.
The family would like to thank the staff at Decatur Morgan Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during his month long stay.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Austinville United Methodist Church (908 Lamar Street SW Decatur, AL 35601) or Decatur Senior Center (P.O. Box 591 Decatur, AL 35602).
